Game Off (26th August 2010)

Game Off (17th August 2010)

Yet again Cardiff Parks have decided to call off all fixtures.  This is despite the weather forecast being dry for the rest of the day, it seems no matter what the weather Cardiff Parks seem intent on cancelling fixtures at a whim.  We will attempt to reschedule the fixture against Media Wales but time is against us.

Any problems please contact Gareth Ball.

Cup Final Postponed (4th August 2010)

Due to the meteorological expertise of a Cardiff parks employee, who seemingly did not want to see his precious Blackweir pitches harmed by the certain heavy rain apparently due this evening (as we all bake in gleaming sunshine), tonights cup final has been postponed.  We will now endeavour to re-arrange the final on a mutually agreeable date with our opponents the Cardiff Bay Barbarians.

A tough selection as many people are available for both fixtures, some only for one and a few for neither at all.

Balancing opportunity for everyone while including key players and also ensuring people get a game has resulted in the selections.  We would like as many non playing members to turn up as possible on each match night as it is squads that are vitally important and win us games and not individuals.

If your availability has changed can you let Gareth Ball know ASAP please. Can we all be at Central Park at 5.45pm for a prompt 6pm start.

Victory in first game (12th May 2010)

Thursday 6th May 2010 - a date keenly anticipated by all sides for months. As phones trilled, e-mails flurried, and unsubstantiated rumours leaked out of the opposing parties’ headquarters, a nation held its breath. Finally the announcement came at 4.30pm – the game was on.

Having won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch as green (but not as flat) as a snooker table, Barbarians got off to the worst possible start. Matt Ball’s loosener outside off stump was met by an equally loose shot from opening batsman Jones and Luke Williams, on his Centurions debut, safely pouched the catch.

That set the tone for a high-octane bowling and fielding display from Centurions. None of the batsmen (with the exception of Walker, who hit some well-timed blows before being bowled by Shearer) were able to impose themselves as Centurions kept up the pressure, with cleverly rotated bowling options, disciplined line and length, and switched-on fielding.

All the bowlers found success; Matt Ball picked up 2 for 9 off 3 fine overs, Ross Phillips bagged Payne, and the middle overs saw Bromiley and Shearer tie Barbarians down completely, with 3 wickets and just 7 runs coming off their 6 overs, Shearer taking 2 for 2. Howard’s off spin picked up a couple more wickets as Barbarians looked to relieve the pressure, only to find the safe hands of Ross Phillips and Luke Williams. Matt Phillips came back to bowl a textbook final over, deservingly bowling Darracott with the final ball of the innings.

The bowlers were supported throughout by a dynamic fielding display in which Centurions put into practice all the good work from pre-season. Rich Lewis was, like the Virgin Mary, immaculate behind the stumps, taking a sharp catch behind off Shearer to dismiss Lansley, and whipping off the bails after a deadly accurate throw from Ross Phillips to run out Dandu. Alex Coombs patrolled the infield like the election result depended on it, and on the rare occasions that Barbarians did get past the inner circle, the strong arm of Hywel Williams made sure that they were kept to ones and twos.

Chasing just 47 to win, openers Lewis and Gareth Ball got centurions off to a solid start, Ball hitting a fine boundary before departing to a very well taken slip catch. Lewis walked after snicking one from the dangerous Lunia, and Luke Williams and Howard were undone by some quality bowling from Barbarians’ captain Matt Clarke. Any nerves after were calmed by Bromiley’s classy and controlled innings, as he made a chanceless 16 to steer Centurions home, Matt Ball joining him for the winning partnership and signalling his intent for the rest of the season with a brutal pull through square leg.

All in all, a thoroughly satisfactory start to the Centurions’ campaign. The challenge now will be to maintain the high standards set at Blackweir in the weeks ahead.  Match report written by "the mystery pen".  For a full scorecard click here.
