Cancellation ends season (26th August 2008) The final game of the season has again been cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. The worst August that anyone can remember has seen five fixtures in a row being cancelled. It means the season draws to a disappointing end. All that is left is the end of season presentations, final details of which can be found here.
Squad for final game of the season (23rd August 2008) Below is the squad for the scheduled final game of the season, again against Llantwit Fardre Centenary select XI as we final aim to end the season by playing this prestigous game. The squad is in no particular order. 1. M. Phillips (capt) 2. G. Ball 3. N. Shearer 4. M. Ball 5. A. Hibberd 6. N. Howard 7. P. Davies 8. R. Lewis 9. A. Coombs 10. M. Judd 11. R. Phillips 12. I. Mansell Any problems please let Gareth Ball know as soon as possible. Please be at the ground by 5.45pm prompt.
Centenary game yet again cancelled (19th August 2008) All we seem to be reporting are cancellations and this Wednesday's (20th August) attempt to play our centenary game against Llantwit Fardre has again been cancelled. The pitch at Llantwit Fardre is unplayable and even if it remained dry would still be unplayable due to the sheer amount of rain we have had recently. This rescheduled fixture had replaced our planned game which was to be our first fixture with South Wales Echo, we thank them for their understanding. Next weeks game against Cardiff Bay Barbarians, our scheduled last game of the season, has also been called replaced with our seeemingly final attempt to play our centenary match, we again thank Cardiff Bay Barbarians for their understanding. Lets all prey for some sun!
Another cancellation (12th August 2008) It is with great disappointment that the terrible and frustrating weather of this summer (after last summer you may have thought things coudl improve) that the fourth attempt to play our centenary fixture has fallen to the foul weather. We will attempt to reschedule this game on a rolling basis until the end of the season.
Fourth time of asking (6th August 2008) It was not third time lucky as tonights fixture has been called off as the pitch at Central Park is unplayable due to the rain over the past week. The centenary game has been re-arranged for next Wednesday 13th August (which will be the fourth attempt at this centenary fixture) as our original opponents, Cardiff Cavaliers, have a rescheduled cup final to play next week. A full revised fixture list can be found here.
Third time lucky (4th August 2008) It will be a case of third time lucky when we attempt to again play our fixture against a Llantwit Fardre Select XI as part of their centenary celebrations. The already re-arranged fixture of Wednesday 30th July 2008 was again cancelled. It started raining again around 5pm however the skies did clear at around 6.30pm. Unfortunately the rain had warterlogged the squares immediately surrounding the match wicket and the area was unplayable. Planned celebrations did go ahead in teh bar afterwards and we would like to thank Llantwit Fardre for their generosity. The fixture has been re-arranged again for Wednesday 6th August 2008 when we will it will be a case of third time lucky. Here is the team selected for this centenary fixture again in no particular order. 1. M. Phillips (Capt) 2. G. Ball (Wkt) 3. N. Shearer 4. R. Lewis 5. M. Ball 6. S. Williams 7. R. Phillips 8. N. Howard 9. P. Davies 10. M. Judd 11.A. Coombs As you can see it is a bare eleven so if anyone has any issues can they please advise Gareth Ball urgently in the usual way. We would like to thank Cardiff Bay Barbarians, our scheduled opposition for Wednesday 6th August, who have agreed to cancel the fixture at short notice. A full revised fixture list can be found here.
Emphatic defeat to Casuals (4th August 2008) Our fifth defeat of this difficult season came in our return fixture against Cardiff Casuals. On a sunny evening the Casuals elected to bat but found themselves in a spot of bother as M.Phillips was getting the ball to swing at pace and Shearer was getting movement off the seam. The opening pair reduced the Causals to 28-4 WIth Stephens (5), O'Reilly (12), Hirani (1) and Holliday (0) all falling early. The highlights of this period were two inswinging yorkers from M. Phillips that would have seen off most batsmen and some accomplished fielding as Davies and Williams both took good catches. Phillips finished with 2 for 9 and Shearer 2 for 10. That was as good as it got though for the Centurions. Karim and Gough came in for the Casuals and batted excellently. Initially in a calm and watchful manner to alleviate the collapse and eventually with flair and powerful placement to accelerate the rate. Few chances were given, one sharp chance behind and a lofted chance over covers were put down, but both were not straight forward. Gough eventually fell hitting out to Mansell who held on well at mid off for a well made 42, off the bowling of Hibberd. Karim finished a watchful 26 not out and Foote 4 not out at the end. Daves 0 for 21, R. Phillips 0 for 24, Hibberd 1 for 23 and Williams 0 for 18 were the bowlers used. 115 for 5 was the final Casuals score, a decent target of 116 set on a slow outfield. Unfortunately the Centurions did not make a decent fist of the reply. The run rate always too slow and an inability to manouver the ball to rotate the strike meant by the time the middle order came in it was mission impossible. Only Lewis, yet again, with 31 at times lucky runs showed the way. He briefly got some support from Hibberd (11) who is coming back to form. Aside from that the innings saw no fewer than 4 ducks as the rate to chase became unreachable. A well deserved victory for the Casuals as all of their bowlers showed excellent discipline with Davies (3 for 9) and Stephens (3 for 2) enjoying the fruits of the efforts of the bowlers before them at the end of the innings. The Centurions finished 65 all out, which even more disappointingly took the alloted full 20 overs and the Casuals won resoundingly by 50 runs. A full scorecard can be found here.
